IS AHMADIYYA THE FASTEST GROWING SECT IN THE WORLD?

Ahmadi Muslims have never been obsessed with our numbers worldwide. All we say is that there are many Ahmadis, we wish there were more and that Allah knows best what the actual number is.

However, anti-Ahmadis sites have for a long time been obsessed with this figure. A few weeks ago, the two most notable anti-Ahmadi sites on the internet published articles/threads within days of one another, which rehashed this issue and estimated the worldwide number of Ahmadi Muslims as perhaps half a million, before going onto claim that Ahmadis were quickly leaving the jama'at and that, God forbid, the Ahmadiyya community would cease to exist in the western world within the next few years.

We responded to this abysmal propaganda by publishing the analysis of an international research group from the USA, called the Pew Forum. They had investigated the issue thoroughly and as part of a wider report into the Muslim world had concluded that 13 African countries alone have a combined population of almost 8 million Ahmadi Muslims and that thousands of people are converting into the Ahmadiyya Community. This completely fit with Hadhrat Mirza Masroor Ahmad's announcement a few weeks later that in the previous year over half a million people had converted into the Ahmadiyya community.

Anyhow, Iron Man and I, who did the original research, were recently discussing a related subject. This is the allegation that more people convert to other sects of Islam, such as Sunniism, than to Ahmadiyya. This, the anti-Ahmadis claim, somehow proves that Sunniism is the religion which is receiving most divine help and therefore Sunnism is true and therefore, God forbid, Ahmadiyya is false. Whilst the above logic is somewhat flawed, Iron Man and I thought it would be an interesting study to find what the comparative net conversion rates and growth rates of these two branches of Islam were.

Research was undertaken and it was quickly found that only one source had anything like authoritative figures on this issue. This source is a book called the 'World Christian Encyclopedia' which was published in 2001 by Oxford University. In it is a detailed statistical analysis on every religion and sub-division on religion.

The findings from this book were simply fascinating. According to statistics, when we calculate the net annual growth as a percentage of the original population, Islam is the fastest growing religion in the world. Furthermore, the fastest growing sect of the fastest growing religion is- you guessed it- Ahmadiyya. Remember, these aren't our statistics, they're independent statistics from independent research by the 'World Christian Encyclopedia'.

The statistics were very detailed and covered numerous religions, as well as as more than a dozen different sects of Islam and we have summarised the significant and relevant statistics in the two tables below:
