Introduction
The Lahoris are a group of Ahmadis who accept Hadhrat Mirza Ghulam Ahmad as a holy man, but not a prophet and reject Khilafat-e-Ahmadiyya altogether. They number a few hundred or perhaps a few thousand worldwide and 100 years after they split from teh Khilafat this blog had absolutely zero interest with them or with writing about them. However, after members of their organisation began posting foul mouthed, abusive tirades against Khilafat-e-Ahmadiyya on this blog we decided we might as well respond by asking them a few simple questions about their beliefs. So far we have asked 16 questions and beyond replying with swear words they have failed to answer a single one of them. This aritcle will continue the questions.
The prophethood of Hadhrat Mirza Ghulam Ahmad
All Ahmadis, including mainstream Ahmadis and the Lahori group, accept Hadhrat Mirza Ghulam Ahmad as the messiah who was prophecised to come in the latter days by The Holy Prophet s.a.w and who would be similar to Jesus. However, the Holy Prophet s.a.w was also clear that this person would himself be a prophet as can be seen from the following ahadith:
Jesus the prophet of Allah and his companions will be besieged…then, Jesus the prophet of Allah, and his companions will turn to Allah…then, Jesus the Prophet of Allah and his companions will invade the camps of the enemy…and finally Jesus the prophet of Allah, and his companions will turn to Allah…(Muslim)
Beware, there shall be no prophet or messenger between Jesus, the son of Mary, and me. Remember, he shall be my Khalifa in my Ummah after me (Tibrani)
Prophethood shall remain among you as long as God wills. He will bring about its end and follow it with Khilafat on the precepts of prophethood for as long as He wills and then bring about its end. Kingship shall then follow to remain as long as God wills and then come to an end. There shall then be tyranny which shall remain as long as God wills and come to an end upon His decree. There will then emerge Khilafat on the precepts of Prophethood (Musnad-i-Ahmad)
Then, in the early 1880s, Hadhrat Sahib received a revelation in which Allah described him as:
'The Champion of Allah in the mantle of the prophets' (Baraheen-e-Ahmadiyya).
In the same book, he was addressed in revelations by Allah as 'Jesus' and was also described by those revelaitons as being 'like Moses'. However, Hadhrat Mirza Ghulam Ahmad interpreted these prophecies as metaphors. Only later on receiving similar revelations over and again did he understand their true meaning which he explained as follows:
Some members of my community, who are less familiar with my claim and its supporting arguments, and who have neither had the chance to study my books in depth, nor have they spent enough time in my company to be fully informed, sometimes counter an objection raised by an opponent with an answer which is entirely contrary to the facts. Thus, notwithstanding their adherence to the truth, they have to suffer embarrassment...
…God Almighty says that, after the Holy Prophet s.a.w, the door of prophecies has been closed till the Day of Judgement, and that it is no longer possible for a Hindu, a Jew, a Christian or a nominal Muslim to assume the title of ‘Prophet’; and that all the doors leading to Prophethood have been closed except the door of Sirat-e-Siddiqi
Thus he who comes to God through this door is clad, by way of Zill (complete devotion to the Holy Prophet s.a.w, and such self-effacement that a person begins to reflect the image of his Master s.a.w. [Publishers]), in the same mantle of Prophethood which is the mantle of the Prophethood of Muhammad s.a.w. As such, his being a Prophet is not a matter for jealously, for he does not derive this status from himself but from the fountain of the Holy Prophet s.a.w and, that too, not for his own glory but for the glory and majesty of the Holy Prophet s.a.w. For this reason, in heaven he is named Muhammad and Ahmad. Thus the Prophethood of Muhammad s.a.w, in the final analysis, returns to Muhammad s.a.w, albeit by way of Buruz (Buruz: Spiritual manifestation; or the person who is the spiritual manifestation of a Prophet as or Saint. [Publishers]), and to no one else.” (Hadhrat Mirza Ghulam Ahmad, Eik Ghalti Ka Izala, 1901)
Initially at least, the founder of the Lahori movement understood the above passage exactly as mainstream Ahmadi Muslims understand it today. He wrote:
We are firmly of the view that God can make any one a Prophet, a Faithful one, a Martyr or a Righteous one. What is needed is a seeker. He to whom we swore allegiance was righteous, a chosen one of God and a holy Messenger. The spirit of holiness had achieved its climax in him. (Maulawi Muhammad Ali, Al Hakam,July 18th 1908)
Maulawi Muhammad Ali Sahib's closest ally in the Lahori movement, Khwaja Kamaluddin, Sahib seems to have had the same views at an earlier time:
A Prophet and Messenger arose in your neighbourhood. It is up to you to accept him or not. (Khwaja Kamaluddin Sahib, addressing a meeting in India, Damima Akhbar Badr, January 26 1911)
